its the fiddley stuff thats annoying...

There are so many little things to tidy up - gap filling, second coat painting, switch covers to fit. its seems like we are almost there (finished) but then i need to add another little job to the list.  SO - the walls are painted, the bath and the shower are sorted.  the TOILET goes! YAH! this was huge for me as we had no toilet for a few days - ick!  there is dust everywhere but its shaping up so well - in fact I'm really happy with how its turning out.  i look back at that first demo day and think - that was just ONE WEEK AGO TODAY! its been a pretty huge week.

Today i picked up our tiles - lucky to have found some fab tiles on trademe - and got them on the bath surround before lunch time! they were a tight squeeze in the end as i had allowed an 8mm gap (which is what i would normally use on a bath surround) but these luxury tiles were 10mm - enough of a difference to be a bit of a pain - but i was happy with how i went - especially as i had to work out how to cut tiles with a masonry disc on the grinder! new skill learnt today.  working out how to get the disc off in the first place had me cursing.  then going to the hardware store to find the right disc (in the right size) then cracking a few tiles working out how to get them just right.  Well - it was actually awesome when i had them in and looking great.  Grouting happens tomorrow!

going nuts in the bathroom....

theres staying busy and then theres mania.  we hit mania - and soon i feel a crash coming.  Work all day, home for dinner, go back, work some more! we now have functioning light fitting! its awesome.  the bathroom is going beautifully. there is paint on walls. windows are finished. the bath is now in with a liner attached to the walls. tomorrow plumbing is being connected - more painting, some awesome wallpaper and a fit out and we will be DONE! by the end of next week hopefully the bathroom will be COMPLETE! how nice will it be to have an operational bathroom!   also - another lesson learnt, probably buying bathroom accessories from Chinese people who speak very little english not a great idea. bath is longer than i wanted, but it works so thats fine.

Ceiling PAINTED! my gib stopping is UNSTOPPABLE!

BATHROOM

Without a doubt - the room in the house that is in the worst condition.  Im saddened that people were living like this.  I was VERY surprised and VERY happy to find NO rot under all this, there was a lot of damage to the bath cradle (which was cast flipping iron and weighed a TON!) but we weren't keeping that anyway, so out it went.

In-Laws are in the house - the kids are SO happy! They aren't getting dragged around with me this week, they are going to parks, playgrounds, on nature walks, museums, or just staying around home.  BLISS! as for me, have kicked it up a gear to take advantage of child care and we are going crazy in the bathroom.  Demo this time went much much better. in two days - have gutted, sorted the plumbing, and started the re-lining.  Waiting on the bath/liner/screen combo to arrive from Mitre 10 - hopefully hopefully by Friday so we can start the fit out - thats assuming that i can sand that gib stop, undercoat everything and get some paint on the walls!  going to give it a really good go!!

3 weeks and counting

We've had the house for three weeks.  seems like a lot longer.  I'm still having a bit of trouble writing, I'm best staying busy. so - photos of whats been happening is probably best.

Putting the kitchen together.  cabinets are put together, just prepping and fitting out the cabinet doors.

Stripping up MDF to accent the doors.  attached and undercoated ready for enamel tomorrow.

Windows are prepped and undercoated ready for enamel.  Pantry doors and main door stripped up with MDF, bogged and sanded, this is pre undercoat (now done) ready for enamel.

wainscotting all undercoated.  the change is DRAMATIC.  All that hard work and its looking legit amazing.

The sprayer has been such a huge time saver.  ceilings all have two coats of ceiling flat.  lifts the whole room! amazing. I'm so happy with it.

Tomorrow will enamel the wainscotting, the windows in the kitchen.  have prepped the exterior windows at the front of the house today, so they will be a sand and paint tomorrow hopefully - weather depending!

A Time To Rest

I have a beautiful friend.  Thats really not understating things, literally beautiful, inside and outside.  She passed away.  Im so sad.  I feel incapable about writing about her, so I'm putting up some photos of her and the speech i wrote for her beautiful funeral.

Hello everyone, im Mandy, and im Nerolis friend.  When I was on the phone with Joseph about talking today he asked me if I would be okay to speak, I was like ‘man, have you met me?’.  But now, it’s a little bit different.

I wrote so many talks, talks about Neroli and how amazing she is, nothing seemed quite right, because I don’t want to talk about her.  I want to talk TO her.  We have so many things to say to each other, just like im sure all of you do.  So I wrote things down – things I wanted – and needed you to hear Neroli, things that I have always thought but just didn’t say mainly because I always figured there might be another time, another day, or a better moment.  And now that I find that all of our moments are gone, im so remorseful that I wont be able to give you these words in person.  So – here you are – in the most public way possible – the things I wanted to say to you but ran out of time.

So - My darling friend.
Everyone who comes into contact with you knows that you are a force of nature, people just get swept up in your energy and enthusiasm.  You have a gravitational pull, just being around you will make anyone feel better.  There is an intensity about you that is completely unique.

You have an uncanny ability to be insightful, to articulate advice or motivation in exactly the way that people need to hear it, whether that’s in a quiet private space, or as you scream at someone to move their butt.  You really look at people, and see them, not in a fake way, but in a ‘hey, I see you’ kind of way.  Its unusual, you have always gone out of your way to make people feel special, seen, heard.  The way that you take interest in others, empathise with them and actively look for ways to make people feel better is a gift my friend.  The number of times ive heard you say “wait…. Ive got something for you…..”.

You are so smart.  I completely love this about you.  Most people don’t know how hard you have studied last year, and how fantastic your grades are.  You have an insatiable thirst for knowledge – its phenomenal.  This is a woman who is getting up early in the morning while most of us are still sleeping – she laughs and says ‘im amazed at how much I can get done before anyone elses day has even started’.   Studying and running – by the way 5km in 18mins is now my life goal – cleaning and preparing for your family all before 7am.   You do this without complaint, even when your tired.

Did you know that you are beautiful?  Truly. And its just so obvious to anyone who looks at you, but it is honestly, just a direct result of the person that you are inside.  But your a such a terrible compliment taker –deflecting compliments onto other people – saying “Me? Ppssshh… but THIS one here….” although in saying that, your doing better at saying ‘thanks, ive been working hard on that’.  I know that’s been a hard thing, but your doing great at that.

You are a phenomenal athlete, you are the benchmark against which many of us aspire to.  Mentally tough, physically strong, and so competitive!  You embraced Crossfit and Crossfit loved you right back.  Always pushing though, then dragging the rest of us along behind you.  Its your tenacity that sets you apart.

You’re a great conduit.  You have this ability to see needs, and find ways to fill them, roping people in along the way to help.  And you just do this so under the radar, like its no big deal.  Just an everyday person doing everyday things, never really acknowledging just how special and amazing you really are.  I think its your innate ability to relate to anyone and everyone that helps people on one hand to feel good about donating time, effort or things and on the other hand, for those people who receive, to feel valued.

There are so many facets to a real woman, so many hats that we wear, so many roles that we have, you have always – always - interchanged seamlessly, multitasked beautifully, as a wife, as a mother, a sister and cousin, as a friend.  It has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life watching you over the last 18 months, blossom, and embrace your strength.  Own your opinions, think deeply, work hard and love fiercely.

You are a game changer, the brightest star in the sky.  I am profoundly different because I have known you.  I want you to know that I saw you.  I learnt so much from you, you have influenced my life for the better, and im grateful – for all of you wise words, your mad laughter, your belief in me and in the inherent goodness of people.

I miss you today, and im going to miss you tomorrow, in fact, probably everyday for the rest of my life.  I will miss my friend.

And not just me, but all of us as her family and friends and I thought to myself- if you have found her in some way to be inspiring - then be inspired.

Its that simple.  When I think of so many people whos lives have been touched by her and made better.  The very far reaching effect that she – one person - has had on so many, this surely must be a legacy that we can all be a part of.  Some sense made out of this tragedy.

She was all about learning life lessons, how can I be better?  Therefore - how can we collectively be better because we knew her, because we have been inspired by her, to touch others lives for the better, to give generously when we are able, and to be, above all other things, to be kind.

I think that it is with a willingness to try, a big old cheesey grin, a quiet determination to serve.

In life you taught us all to:
Love stronger, hug tighter, smile, laugh, I can hear you yelling “come on - one more rep”, to push yourself further, to go harder, to think first, and to feel deeply.

And even now – your still schooling me – and believe me when I tell you – im taking notes.
Ive learnt over the last week  three very important things that we all need to say
1. Say I love you….often and mean it.
2. Say im so sorry……
3. And finally but most importantly -  Please help me.

The last thing you said to me was “I love you”, Im really glad I got to say that back to you that one last time.

oh yes!

HIP HORRAY!! We nailed it today! thats a building joke. obviously i need some new material! ... thats a building joke too...

Anyway - We got the wainscotting up in the lounge/dining/kitchen.  its starting to take shape now! in fact i may get tricky and do some - before/after business.  Cause that would be very tricky and probably beyond me... but ill try!

its funny how fast the day disappears - once we got there this morning we just went straight into it. stop for morning tea - stop for lunch - stop for afternoon tea, but apart from that we just chipped away.  it was very very fun.  i have a twisted sense of fun i know. but I'm already planning the next steps.  we are going to get that sprayer back and I'm going to tape up the whole room so we can undercoat the lot in one go! fun! I'm thinking i can get everything ready by next weekend as long as the kids play the game for me - I'm feeling confident - plus I'm a fan of bribing - so this should work out.  i won't hold my breath but I'm going to give it a damn good shot.

HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!

Goodbye 2015, im SO not sad to see you go.  It was the buttcrack of a donkey and I'm convinced that 2016 is going to be the opposite.

Leading into new years eve we were pushing and pushing to get as much done as possible - and in fact i was pretty happy with how that Thursday went - we got the refrigerator unit knocked up and installed.  still needs bogging, sanding and painting, but the bones are very good - and heavy - as i found out when i was volunteered to hold it in place overhead while it was screwed into the studs.  lucky for me i have some practice with holding heavy shit overhead.

SO - new years eve normally for us is a total non event - indecisively debating whether we can even be bothered staying up?
This year we decided we would go hang with some friends and it was SO fun!  even though - our little 3 guy decided he would jump off the top bunk and land on his arm - que trip to A&E - where the fates were WITH us - we went straight into x ray, walked straight in to see the doctor - he had a fracture in his wrist - had a very experienced RN plaster up his arm and we were back to the party within the hour! WHAT? yes!! you wouldn't read about it.  best public health service EVER.

"Don't break your bones Mac"

New years day was spent feeling a bit delicate (me not the kid) hangovers are NO fun.  so it was a day off from the house.  Saturday though we were BACK - and excited to finally finally start with the wainscotting!  This was my big deal must have and what i wanted to do right from the first time we walked into the house - so to be here now is VERY cool.  Seeing as it was raining, we set up the bench saw in the lounge and stripped down 3mm MDF and generally made a huge mess - but I'm so so happy with getting it up finally! because it took so long getting everything stripped down and ready we only have one wall done so far - but the feel of it is great and Reilly and i have a good flow going so the rest of the lounge/dining/kitchen is planned for tomorrow all going well!

Ive had a rejig of my calendar and I'm surprised and happy to say that things are going pretty good - I'm hoping that by the end of next weekend we will have these two rooms undercoated and ready for wallpaper/tiling! we have a step by step plan for the next 7 days and all going well its going to work out!  on monday we are taking the kids to pick up the french doors we grabbed off trademe - also happens to be by the beach! YAH!! a lot of the holiday people might have gone home by then and The Mount may be a very nice place to be.  the kids at least will have a break - they really have been very very good for us so far.
